"By bringing SCATS out, what it's doing is it’s giving the opportunity for my program to be looked at. We take pride in our program, but it's a nice check and balance system to have a professional organization as SCATS to come out and look at it, and give us a gauge on where we're at right now currently on how we think we're performing from a safety standpoint."

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.
Billy Naylor - Divisional Safety Director

McCarthy is a large general contractor. We've been in business for 151 years. The great benefit is we're employee-owned, so we own the company. At the end of the day, we're all working for each other, which it's a great benefit, as a true commitment that each of us give to it. We've been dealing with SCATS now for a little over 20 years, had the opportunity to have them walk our job sites - just recently, we've really had an opportunity that I'm very proud of. We've recently got into a partnership with them on two of our projects and from there, we had the opportunity to be awarded a Safe Partner Award, which is given to four businesses annually. By bringing SCATS out, what it's doing is it’s giving the opportunity for my program to be looked at. We take pride in our program, but it's a nice check and balance system to have a professional organization as SCATS to come out and look at it, and give us a gauge on where we're at right now currently on how we think we're performing from a safety standpoint. So the benefits are twofold to me, for sure. First of all, once again, it gives me an opportunity to have a professional organization who writes the regulations to come out and see how I'm performing against the regulations. And it gives an opportunity for my subcontractors to have, first of all, to have an opportunity to go through a formal OSHA audit and second of all, to have their safety program reviewed. If I had the opportunity to sit down with a Nevada business, I would, first of all, explain the positive benefits I've had from it, not to mention the relationships I've built performing with SCATS. With dealing with SCATS, I now have an opportunity with OSHA that I can pick up the phone and call them and have a question with no repercussions, which is very beneficial for me as a business person. I would also have no issue with fielding any questions or concerns that they would have. Having an outside agency come in and look at our program, it helps elevate us each time.
