Workplace safety is important to Desert Star Energy Center because safety is about people, not just policies.

My name is Greg Cvetnich. I’m the Manager of Fossil Power Operations for the San Diego Gas and Electric Desert Star Energy Center.

I play a critical role in setting the safety culture. I not only prioritize compliance with rules and procedures, I ensure that we prioritize safety above productivity.

We chose to start working with Nevada SCATS when we began our VPP journey in 2008. The VPP – Voluntary Protection Program – is a cooperative program between companies and OSHA where companies can achieve recognition for having an exemplary safety management system.

In our experience, working with SCATS has always been confidential. It’s always been a real partnership. If we have a question on how to comply with an OSHA standard, we can always reach out to them for guidance.

Since partnering with Nevada SCATS, the changes I’ve seen in our workforce go back to the culture. We took a workplace safety culture that was really driven by our corporate safety office and taken ownership. We now drive safety at the employee level rather than it being pushed down onto them. With that, we have this culture of continuous improvement that really follows through in everything that we do.
